Our Illustration Philosophy
Bumpa & Riley Books
We believe art and education have always belonged together.
Our stories begin with human imagination — characters we design, scenes we map, emotional arcs we carefully build. Every illustration starts with our written direction. We generate an initial visual concept using digital tools, then refine it in layers — adjusting composition, lighting, expressions, environmental detail, and character continuity across scenes.
AI does not create our stories. It does not decide our characters. It does not determine our message.
It functions as a creative tool — much like a camera, a paintbrush, or digital design software — under human direction.
We do not ask systems to imitate specific living artists. We do not attempt to replicate identifiable artistic styles. Our goal is to produce original visual storytelling that supports literacy, science education, environmental awareness, and emotional development.
We recognize that AI and art raise important ethical questions. Artists deserve transparency and fair treatment in how their work informs emerging technologies. That conversation matters — and we follow it closely.
For us, these tools expand access. They allow a grandfather and granddaughter to publish meaningful, affordable children’s books that might not otherwise exist.
The heart of every book remains human.
